Sanitizer - An agent that reduces the number of disease causing (pathogenic) bacteria on an inanimate food contact surface to safe levels as judged by public health requirements. A sanitizer generally is a chemical that kills 99.999% of specific test bacteria in a specified amount of time.
Disinfectant - An agent that frees an inanimate body (generally hard nonporous surfaces) from infection by destroying microorganisms. Disinfectants kill 100% of certain microorganisms, but they are not used on people, only inanimate surfaces. Because disinfectants do not kill all microorganisms, especially bacterial spores, they are different from sterillants.
Sanitizers are used at much lower concentrations than the concentrations used for disinfectants. As an example, quaternary ammonium compounds are used at 200 ppm as sanitizers, but anywhere from 600 to 2100 ppm as disinfectants. Where sanitizers are used at low concentrations to avoid leaving a residue that could be harmful to people or food, disinfectants are used at concentrations that will leave 3 a potentially dangerous residue because the primary concern is germ killing, not food safety.
Grassroots Disinfectant
Grassroots Disinfectant is a DIN (02410613) registered disinfectant cleaner sanitizer primarily used for food premises, hospital/Hc facilities, and institutional/industrial.
SANITIZING – Food Contact Surfaces: to sanitize pre cleaned, non porous food contact surfaces and utensils immerse in a 13 mL per 1 L or 2 oz./gal (200 ppm) solution of Grassroots Disinfectant for at least 60 seconds. Allow to air dry. Do not rinse.
DISINFECTION – to disinfect hard non porous surfaces, add 58 mL/L or 9 oz./ gal of water. Treated surfaces must remain wet for 10 minutes. At this use level, Grassroots Disinfectant is also fungicidal. At this dilution, all surfaces on which this product is used and which come in contact with food, are to be rinsed with potable water.
Viruses: at 60 mL/L or 9 oz./ gal, Grassroots Disinfectant was evaluated and found to be effective against the Influenza A/Brazil Virus, Avian Influenza A (H3N2) virus, Avian Influenza A (H5N1) virus, Feline Calicivirus tested as a surrogate for Norwalk Virus and Human Coronavirus on inanimate environmental surfaces Kills Influenza A virus and is likely to kill the current Influenza A H1N1 virus. Effective against Influenza A virus and likely to kill 2009 (H1N1) pandemic Influenza A virus. This product has demonstrated effectiveness against Influenza A virus and is expected to inactivate all Influenza A viruses including 2009 (H1N1) pandemic Influenza A virus. Instructions for Cleaning and Decontaminating against HIV 1 on Surfaces and Objects Soiled with Blood or Bodily Fluids: This product is effective against HIV 1 (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in the presence of organic soil (5% blood serum).
Grassroots Disinfectant is a broad-spectrum virucidal hard surface disinfectant that is expected to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19)”.
